As a Field Service Engineer, Robotics at Madern Automation, you will play a crucial role in the modification and maintenance of our existing systems, as well as in supporting new installation projects during the initial commissioning phase. You will provide technical expertise and support to customers nationwide, leveraging your specialization in Robotics and/or PLC, while also possessing a broad technical knowledge to assist in various areas as needed.  

What we are looking for:

Technical & Structural Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a highly related equivalent technical discipline.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years of relevant hands-on programming experience across industrial robotics and automation infrastructure.
  • Technical Aptitude: Strong diagnostic mechanical and electrical knowledge related to automated machinery, material handling, and plant logistics systems.
  • Travel Eligibility: Unrestricted willingness and ability to travel extensively (66%+), including domestic driving and international flights.
  • Credentials: Must possess a valid state-issued driver's license with a clean driving record and a valid U.S. Passport (or immediate ability to acquire one).
  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without future employer sponsorship.

  Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Strength & Dexterity: Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull equipment components or repair tools weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Industrial Mobility: Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and safely climb ladders or scaffolding during installation phases.
  • Sensory Demands: Standard close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and manual focus properties to accurately diagnose wiring boards, PLC setups, and mechanical joints.
  • Environment & Safety: Absolute commitment to safety, health, and environmental standards. Routine exposure to active manufacturing environments with moving mechanical components and high-voltage configurations. Noise levels are typically moderate to loud, requiring consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

About your role as a Field Service Engineer Robotics

This role involves frequent travel, with approximately 2/3 of your time spent at customer locations. When not on the road, you will be expected to work at our facility in the Raleigh/Apex, NC area. The Center of Excellence for Madern Automation is in the Netherlands, and you will be expected to collaborate frequently with your international colleagues, as well as travel to the Netherlands for training and project support. The bulk of Madern’s US-based clients are located east of the Mississippi, although travel throughout the United States and internationally is expected.

Your responsibilities as a Field Service Engineer Robotics

Field Service

  • Breakdown & Site Triage: Collaborate with the service department to assist customers in case of breakdowns, serving as the first point of contact for on-site activities related to assigned projects.
  • Commissioning: Support the commissioning of machines at customer sites, including physical installation, assembly, testing, and strict adherence to technical specifications.
  • Training & Manuals: Develop manual documentation and provide hands-on operator training to customer personnel.
  • System Knowledge: Maintain deep, functional technical knowledge of all existing and planned Madern Automation equipment installations.
  • Service Rotation: Actively participate as an assigned technician in our rotating 24/7 emergency customer service escalation line (active support hours tracked and compensated under FLSA standards).
  Robotics/Controls Engineering
  • Engineering Support: Provide local execution and software alignment support as directed by the Netherlands engineering division or the US sales/service teams.
  • Software Competency: Maintain proficiency in all designated software environments, logic architectures, and specialized automation tooling platforms.
  • Logistics & Plant Tasks: Manage software and detail engineering execution; support US operations by sourcing or shipping designated parts, and execute other plant-support tasks as assigned.
  • Remote Communications: Prepare moderately complex documents and reports using various computer applications while adhering to project management plans. Deliver prompt, high-quality progress logs to colleagues and customers since you will frequently be working remotely from your primary team.
